How it is calculated

The tip is the bill amount multiplied by the percentage and divided by 100, rounded to 2 decimal places (half up).

The total to pay is the exact sum of the bill plus the tip.

When splitting, each person pays the total divided by the number of people, rounded down to the cent; the last person also pays the leftover cents, so the shares reconcile exactly with the total.

In El Salvador some restaurants already include a 10% service charge on the bill: check the receipt before leaving an additional tip.

Worked example

A $45 dinner shared by 3 people, with a 15% tip. How much does each person pay?

  1. Calculate the tip: $45 × 15 ÷ 100 = $6.75.
  2. Add up the total: $45 + $6.75 = $51.75.
  3. Divide between the people: $51.75 ÷ 3 = an exact $17.25 per person.

Each person pays $17.25 and the shares reconcile with the $51.75 total.

How to interpret the result

The per-person total already includes the tip: nothing else needs to be added.

When the division is not exact, the difference is a matter of cents: the last person pays a few cents more so the sum matches the total. The calculator shows that adjusted share separately.

The tip is calculated on the bill, not on the tip-inclusive total: 15% of $45 is $6.75, even though the final total is $51.75.

Common mistakes

  • Calculating the tip on a total that already includes a service charge: check the receipt before applying the percentage.
  • Splitting the bill into rounded shares that do not add up to the total: someone quietly overpays or underpays.
  • Confusing the tip percentage with an amount: 15 means 15% of the bill, not $15.
